Students visit at BioBAT
On Tuesday a small group of students went to visit the BioBAT BioBAT art space at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. There students met the artist in residence Yoko Shimizu.
Yoko is an Artist and Scientist who is known for pioneering the intersection of art, science, and technology. She is based in Austria where she runs the Ars Electronica FutureLab Ars Electronica
She gave them a personal tour of her art exhibit, including the new installation.
Afterward, Yoko gave a presentation where she encouraged students to create their own paths and merge what they love with what they would like to do for a living. Using herself as an example. She also promised the students a hands-on lab when she returns to the U.S. next year.
Afterward, students went upstairs to visit BioBAT’s BioTech Lab which houses ICE; Interstate Environmental Commission. ICE is a tri-state agency committed to protecting, conserving, and restoring New York’s environment, particularly in the area of water quality; not to be confused with the quality of NY’s drinking water.
They ended the day by taking a ferry back to Manhattan, which was a new experience for the students.
