Sugar Skull Customization

Art Customization and Technique is a new class this year at Judith S. Kaye High School. The class is taught by Mr. Ramos and focuses on using art and creativity to customize things like shoes, bags, hats, etc. Students have learned color theory, shading, gradients, painting, airbrushing, and maintenance of equipment. “My goal for this class is to hopefully have students learn a new skill in fashion,” said Mr. Ramos.  Currently, students are working on customizing Sugar Skulls to celebrate Halloween and the Day of the Dead.

This sugar skull was customized by Mohamed Sanogo. He airbrushed the skull in blue to be different. The red hat was supposed to contrast the blue background. The pink bee is supposed to be demonic. The pink drips were to add more character to the background. The colors on the jaw are supposed to be the skull’s blood. (Andrew Reeves)
This sugar skull was customized by Andrew Reeves. He used darker shading of black on the outline and faded the gradient to light gray towards the center. The yellow hat symbolizes Curious George. The pink drips are a shoutout to Sarria. The blue and orange eye were taken from Spongebob. The handprint made the design pop. (Andrew Reeves)
