On Wednesday, April 17, JSK students got the opportunity to visit the one and only New York Aquarium located in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, NY.
The Aquarium is home to over 500 species of marine wildlife and being part of the city since 1896.We enjoyed the fresh coastal air from the beach nearby and got to see different animals like sea otters, sea lions, jellyfish, crabs and various types of fishes. By increasing public knowledge about environmental challenges affecting the ocean and its ecology the Aquarium of today satisfies the Wildlife Conservation Society’s broader purposes. Despite the weather causing high levels of wind by the beach coastline, JSK students were still able to enjoy the experience. For some, it was an amazing experience seeing colorful creatures in a curated natural habitat.
One student, Mauricio Salgado, stated “My experience going to the aquarium was really nice because I had time to spend with my friends… exploring sea life I never knew about. It was really fantastic.”
On June 6, 1957, the New York Aquarium opened on the Coney Island boardwalk as a part of a bigger initiative to restore the neighborhood. Throughout the process 1.25 million gallons of water were used at a cost of $9 million. A small price to pay to help conserve these beautiful aquatic species.
